USENET SERVER

Usenet is a subset of the internet (or WaFreeNet in this case) that allows people to put a message on a "virtual bulletin board" or "newsgroup" and have others read it and write back. The WaFreeNet Forum is a great tool for our users to discuss matters with each other and internet users interested in wireless networking, with discussion available in a semi-permanent nature. Usenet has the same advantage of semi-permanency, but is quicker and simpler. The major difference between the forum and WaFreeNet usenet is that discussion on wafreenet newsgroups can only be added to and replied to by freenet users. Internet users will not be involved in these discussions. This allows us to have low noise forums specific to our needs.

Connecting to the WaFreeNet news server is identical to connecting to an internet news server. The server address is news.citrusnet.wafreenet on port 119 (9119 for SSL). The following wafreenet newsgroups are available;

wafreenet.ads wafreenet.conference wafreenet.games wafreenet.general wafreenet.netstatus

  • wafreenet.test

I would like to urge all AP and service admins to utilise wafreenet.netstatus to inform users when there are known problems with services or when AP's are expected to go down or is experiencing problems. This will prevent users from pulling their hair out trying to figure out what is wrong, and will make the freenet a happier place to live :)

There is more information and status pages available on the CitrusNet Services page. This is only accessible over the freenet.

If there is a need for additional groups, the usenet admin will be happy to add them.
