History
Frogstar was orginally installed in Joondalup back in late 2001. A Red Hat box was used as the router and was linked to WNNET in Wanneroo. The link was estiblished with a 24dBi Galaxy Connifer modified dish at 5.1km and was a solid 11Mb 802.11b link giving a TCP/IP link speed of about 660 kB/s.
Around the beginning of 2004 Frogstar was relocated to Melbourne and connected into the Melbourne Wireless network. Frogstar's node id was HUT and was linked in via a WRT54G to node GUR in Rowville an area known as the Dandenong Foothills.
In 2006, back to Perth, a 3 meter mast and dish was placed on the roof at Heathridge with an attempt to connect to a wireless node on Caridean Street Heathridge, this link proved unsuccessful and Frogstar remained unlinked for several years. In late 2009 a wireless scan revealed a SSID of "mystic_wafreenet" and after a bit of testing a good 2.4G 802.11b link was estiblished with Mystic's AP with a TCP/IP speed of about 220kB/s, with in a month a NS5 was loaned by Mitch and a link with a TCP/IP speed of 2MB/s was in place on the 5.8G band, the 2.4G remained acting as a standby link.
Early 2010 a 6.5 meter mast was errected on the roof to replace the existing 3 meter mast and a Bullet 5 with a backfire dish was placed at about 5 meters for a link to Mitchland at a TCP/IP link speed of around 2MB/s. The NS5 loaned to connect to Mystic was returned and a NSM5 was installed with a link speed of about 5.8MB/s, the 2.4G link to Mystic was removed, as reduncy is now provided via the mesh. All routing is performed by OpenWRT wireless routers (as seen in the photo below) more details of the router configuration can be found below.
